Description

This is a “stock” pattern headgear plate worn on several styles of hats, shakos and helmets use by the many Massachusetts Militia companies in the twenty-five years prior to the American Civil War.

Stamped in brass and bearing the figure of Chief Massasoit and the gauntleted arm holding a sword, this scolloped plate stands 4.5 inches in height and 3 5/16 inches wide.  Affixed to the reverse are a socket of tin to hold a feather plume, and two mounting pins (one has been repaired.)

Other than a few minor blemishes, most of the rich gilt finish remains, and would be an impressive addition to any insignia collection.
