Leonard T. Gerow was a career army officer having served in Mexico (Vera Cruz), WWI and WWII.
- At the beginning of WWII, Gerow was commanding the 29th Division until assuming the command of V Corps, the largest unit of troops in the European Theater of Operations. I
- n January of 1945 Gerow was given command of the new 15th Army Group.
- Dwight D. Eisenhower felt that Gerow was one of his best field commanders and ranked him highly amongst a large number of other general officers considered.
- His last duty was as the commanding general of the 2nd Army, his last assignment before retirement in 1950.
