Leonard T. Gerow was a career army officer having served in Mexico (Vera Cruz), WWI and WWII.

  • At the beginning of WWII, Gerow was commanding the 29th Division until assuming the command of V Corps, the largest unit of troops in the European Theater of Operations. I
  • n January of 1945 Gerow was given command of the new 15th Army Group.
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower felt that Gerow was one of his best field commanders and ranked him highly amongst a large number of other general officers considered.
  • His last duty was as the commanding general of the 2nd Army, his last assignment before retirement in 1950.

This photograph shows Lt. Gen. Gerow as commanding the 2nd Army thus one of his last portrait photos taken in service. It is signed “L.T. Gerow, Lt. General, Comdy, Second Army.”
