A brief history of 74 captured Virginia Confederate battle flags returned in 1905.
“RETURNED BATTLE FLAGS , Returned to Virginia by the Secretary of War, March the twenty-eighth, nineteen hundred and five.” Whittet & Shepperson, Printers, Richmond, Va. Soft covers, small format, 28 pages, cover illustration only.
The booklet contains a brief history of 74 captured Virginia Confederate battle flags returned in 1905 according to an act of Congress.
A note of interest is the fact that a good number of the flags had no inscriptions made by their captors and it was believed that most of this number were taken at the surrender at Appomattox, and that 10 per cent of the them were taken by Custer’s Cavalry at the battle of Sailor’s Creek on April 6, 1865 only a few day from the surrender of the confederate army by Gen. Lee.
This booklet describes each flag, including their inscriptions or presentations, etc.
A book note commonly encountered. In fine condition.
