This upper bust image of Captain J. Madison Allen, was taken by Winder & Co. Gem Gallery, Cincinnati.  Allen signed the reverse, ” Capt. J.Mad. Allen, A.C.S. U.S. Cavalry, Dept. Cumb’l.”

In September of 1862, Allen was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant into the field and staff of the 10th Ohio Cavalry, reaching the rank of captain just under two months prior to mustering out on April 28, 1864.  During his time in service he apparently was detached and was working as Asst. Commissary of Subsistence of cavalry in the Department (Army) of the Cumberland.

This army was under the command of Major General George Thomas and fought here way from Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign.
