John Pope was a career army officer, who began the Civil War as a brigadier general, serving under General John C. Fremont. He achieved success in the west, and President Lincoln brought him east and gave him command of the Army of Virginia. Unfortunately failed miserably at the Second Battle of Bull Run, and was sent west once again to command various departments in Minnesota, and into the Indian Wars in the Department of the Missouri.
