Adams was a military mail agent in the western theater of the war.
Sergeant John F. Adams of Co. H., 7th Illinois Infantry was detached from his regiment to act as the military mail agent, namely the post master of the 2nd Division, 3rd Brigade, Army of the Tennessee. Taking from copies of his pension records, he was working in that capacity at Forts, Holt, Henry, Donelson, Pittsburg Landing. When the brigade moved, he was then delivering mail to all parts along the Mississippi River. When assigned to the 16th Army Corps delivered mail by rail through lines.
After the war he worked in Lincoln Nebraska, and later when his health declined rapidly, he went to stay in a Soldiers Home in Kansas.
There is other copied paper work on him, his kidney disease he suffered with during the war and the rest of his life.
