Description
This dug relic from Fort Griswald, Groton, Conn. came from the collection of Frank Kravic, known for his extensive collection of dug relics from this era. Purchased from a collector in Connecticut, who obtained main artifacts from Mr. Kravic before he moved from Conn. years ago. We were informed by the collector that Frank mentioned that he had purchased this cannon ball from a fellow digger, and had added it to his collection.
The iron ball is approximately 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Painted in white paint many years ago.
Fort Griswald’s construction began in 1775, and completed in 1778. In 1781, British troops under the command of Benedict Arnold, raided New London; a battle ensued and cannonading was shared from both armies, with the eventual surrender of the fort to the British. Colonel Ledyard, the American commander, surrendered his sword the senior British officer in command of the detachment that took the fort; and then proceeded to run Ledyard through with his own sword. It was not known whether the cannonball is American or British.
A neat hefty piece of Rev. War history.
