Description
The general officer’s full dress belt, made by M.C. LILLY, COLUMBUS, OHIO, well known military goods manufacturers, is a hard belt to obtain. These fancy belts were made for generals only and the reason why they are scarce.
The red moroccan leather and rich gold bullion on the belt are generally in fine to excellent condition with the exception of a few areas where there is some fraying to the bullion. I have photographed most of the areas affected, the few other small areas are minimally affected. The bullion is applied to the leather with a underlying strip of either leather or cardboard to give the bullion a great relief; popping off the belt so to speak. The gilt finish on the brass parts is excellent. The leather shows only the lightest wear on the edges.
This pattern with the three rows of bullion is similar to that used by Civil War general officers.
The sword hangers have snap hooks.
I have owned only a hand full of these belt, including Civil War examples over 35 years of dealing and collecting. A scarce item for the Indian Wars- Spanish American War collector.
