This group of general officers are wearing mourning armbands.
This small candid shot (3×5) shows a rather important group of generals during WWI, all wearing mourning armbands. From left to right, I believe the first is Gen. Payton March, (sorry to say I don’t know), Gen. Pershing, and Col. George C. Marshall (later a general in the late 30’s and the chief army commander during WWII, shown here while on Pershing’s staff).
A small American flag is planted in the ground on a short pole, with the generals standing just behind.
