Description

First, let me clarify the inclusion of a field grade officer’s dress belt in this lot.  The price of $2100.00 is for the coat only.  The dress belt can be purchased with the coat for an additional 400.00, ( the belt – $450.00 by itself).   It did not come with the coat, but sure does make a great display.

The 1872 dress regulations called for vertical bullion tape with buttons at the apex of each strand.  Two strands for company grade officers, and three as in this case, for staff and field officers.  This feature would remain in affect until 1881.  Shoulder knots for the 1872-81 period had a lower profile than those worn on the uniform after 1881-1902.

The coat is in fine condition, with one re-sewn button at the front waist area, and another missing on the lower tails.  The buttons are made by Horstmann Bros & Co., Phila.  Each cuff has 6 cuff buttons each; 3 on the vertical, and 3 above the strands as previously stated.

There is an inner waist belt and buckle.  The lining is fine with exception to one area were there is fraying. Sleeve linings are intact and fine as well.

Over all, the coat is fine +.   The shoulder knots are made by J. H. Wilson, Philadel.  Wonderfully embroidered silver bullion eagles and “Q.D.” on black wool.  Some toning to the silver, but fine condition.

During the period of 1872 – 1881 there were only 4 full colonels in the U.S. Army Ordnance Department; Peter Hagner, Franklin Callender, Theodore Laidley, and James Benton. Without any identification within the coat it can be assumed the coat belonged to one of these officers.  Most officers of the various state guards are most commonly adorned with their state seal buttons.  “72 staff and field coats are not that commonly seen on the market, so I can’t say definitively there is a Federal association, but it remains a most distinct possibility.

The staff and field officer’s dress belt, is in very good + condition, and correct for this era, with the two separate sword hangers on the belt.  No maker name visible on the belt or buckle.  The buckle is nice quality silver plated wreath and banner.  Gilt shows some age toning, wear is minimal. The price on the belt is $450.00, but will sell for $400.00 if purchased with coat. ($2500.00).

It is doubtful that one will find this coat with rare shoulder knots.
