The Baltimore or Phoenix Shot Tower is 234 plus feet tall, and when it was completed in 1828, it was the tallest structure in the United States.

It purpose was to drop molten lead from the top, into a vat of cold water waiting the lead at the bottom, producing “drop shot” for pistols and rifles or larger weapons, When the lead was hardened, and polished the shot was sorted by size and placed in 25 lb bags for sale by the Merchant’s Shot Tower Company who remained in business until 1898.

The image shows the tower in the distance with various shop in the foreground, including a clothing store that also sold pistols;  wonder where they bought their lead shot from.

The image quality and the mount are very good. Published by W.M. Chase, Baltimore.
