Confederate artilleryman and Black (soldier or civilian) lie together dead after the attack on this fort.
The stereoview description reads, ” Rebel Artillery Soldiers, killed in the Trenches of Fort Mahone……at the storming of Petersburg, Va, April 2d, 1865.” It goes on to describe the confederate soldier wearing union equipment.
Photo taken by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., New York.
Photo quality is very good, stereoview overall is very clean.
Interesting to see the black man killed in the fight; you have to wonder if he was one of the thousands that fought for the confederacy?
