U.S. Naval Cap Tally, “U.S.S. CULGOA”

This is an un-used cap tally for a seaman’s cap worn during the the U.S.S. Culgoa’s service in the U.S. Navy from 1898 to 1922. The ship was built in 1889 by J.L. Thompson and Sons, Ltd., Sunderland, England and was purchased by the U.S. Navy at Cavite, Philippines on June 4, 1898. The ship was a refrigerated supply vessel. During her long service under many commands, she made port throughout the world from 1898 to her end of service in 1922.

Culgoa complement was 122 officers and men, and although she had service for nearly 24 years, the cap tallies are a scarce find.

The tally is made of black silk, being 34 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide, with gilt lettering applied. Condition is fine plus.
