Description
1/6 Plate Tintype of a Union Soldier, identified in period pencil behind the image in the back, “R.W. Nichols / N.Y. / Ages 29.” Given the age to be correct, the only candidates in the data base are two Richards;
- Richard Nichols (no middle initial given) – 13th New York Cavalry.
- Richard Nichols (same) – 4th New York Heavy Artillery.
Both were promoted to corporal in 1865, and entered service as privates in 1864.
A worn appearance shows on his face and clothing. He wears a vest under his sack coat, and a slouch hat beside him on the table. The 4th NY H Artillery so hard service in Virginia in 1864-65, and my money rests on the this R.W. Nichols. Not conclusive, yes, but a nice image.
The leatherette case has floral and geometric designs and gilt embossed borders, hinge repaired with flat electrician’s tape.
Very good with a few small dings and folds in the tin. The horizontal lines in one image are from the camera shot.
