Manual Of BAYONET EXERCISES: Prepared For The Use Of The ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES, By George B. McClellan, Commander-In-Chief U.S. Army.  Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co. 1862. Hard cloth covers, 118 pages accompanied by 24 illustrated plates.

Black embossed cover with spread-winged federal eagle at center, with slight wear and to upper spine area and corners. Some pages water stained first few pages.  Plates are fine with some foxing on a few.

Joseph H. Allen was 41 years of age when he enlisted as a captain in the 169th in Sept. of 1862.  He was promoted to major on June 3, 1864, and mustered out with the regiment at Raleigh, NC in July of 1865.  The regiment saw action at the Wilderness, Drury’s Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Campaign, and later at Fort Fisher.
