This sizable section of Trans-Atlantic cable is accompanied by its original tag from the finder/purchaser of this piece. The old tag reads, ” Section of the original Atlantic Cable / obtained by my grandfather, Charles Barker. / ……1908.” The section is 5 1/2 inches in length. The tag string has become detached from the where it is tied. The laying of the telegraph cable was a join effort by England and the U.S. The work began in 1858, but due to poor storage on this the second attempt to complete the line between the two nations, cable sections had to be spliced , and unfortunately snapped in three months.
