Description

1878 Fort Abraham Lincoln D.T. Supply Document.

This receipt for Commissary property was made out at Fort Abraham Lincoln, D.T., on December 16th, 1878.  The list of property turned over from 1st Lt. William Badger, A.C.S., to 1st Lieutenant John Carland, 6th U.S. Infantry, A.A.C.S.  The document may no contain the sexy stuff such as weapons, or accoutrements, but is important to see all of what was required to run an army in that period.

Lt John Carland commanded B Company, 6th Infantry. He was considered a friend to Colonel Custer.  He was present with General Terry, as they both looked over the body of Custer at the Little Big Horn. Garland was a fellow Michigander, who has seen Civil War service with the 23rd Mich. Infantry.  He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1867, into the 6th U.S. Infantry, and as 1st Lt. served as regimental quartermaster until 1869, and then again from 1883- 1887.  Carland was promoted to captain in 1889, retired in 1890 and died that year.
