A large ship’s sized flag stamped with date “45” on the canvas hoist.
Out of stock
1945 Dated Under Secretary Of The Navy Flag. This large flag, 53 x 84 inches, is made of red wool bunting, with applied white cotton stars and multi-piece fouled anchor. A heavy canvas hoist holds a section of hemp rope for attaching raising on flag pole or ship’s hoist line (one end of rope torn away, and no metal attaching rings).
The stamping on the hoist reads, “UNDER SEC SET 4 MI 45.” I believe the “MI” stands for Mare Island, followed by the date 1945.
Condition overall is very good, with some small tears, and some minor staining. I have photographed the most visible of the holing.
Ralph Austin Bard (1944-45), was the Under Secretary of the Navy at this date. The life span of course could go for several more years, but regardless, it is a wartime dated flag. The first we have encountered with the opportunity to purchase.
