Wartime Italian made souvenir for the 45th Infantry Division, with Italian newspaper backing inside.
This all silk pillow sham was made during the Italian Campaign in 1943-44, and marketed by local Italian artisans for this particular 45th Infantry Division GI. No history to share on this piece, but a great piece brought home from service during WWII.
The 45th ID shoulder sleeve insignia is hand embroidered using the division patch colors of gold and red, with a thin green border.
I use the term pillow sham, as most of these are made for that purpose, but this may have been meant for use on a table or for framing, as there is no slot for pillow. An opening in a seam allows a look at a wartime Italian newspaper used as a backing to help fortify the embroidery on the thin silk.
Some light age discoloration, and in need of an ironing. One corner appears damaged at first glance but the maker ran out of border material.
Overall in very good condition.
15 x 17 inches.
