A rare catalog in color, showing advertising signs, and 4 sample aluminum signs in color.
I have never seen one of these catalogs offered on the market, and have no idea just how rare they are. From what I can determine, the firm, ALUMINUM GOODS MFG. CO. / MANITOWOC, WIS / U.S.A. produced this catalog, “ALUMINUM SIGNS OF ART,” during the Great Depression.
After visiting the Columbian Expo in 1893, the owner, Joseph Koenig, started the “Aluminum MFG Co.” in 1895. Another firm in Manitowoc, the “Manitowoc Aluminum Novelty Co.” had begun in 1898, and a third, “The New Jersey Aluminum Co.” (1890), merged into the ALUMINUM GOODS MFG. CO. in 1909.
This firm received its first Government contract to produce canteens in 1911 (pattern 1910), and utensils. They received contracts to produce more canteens during WWII. They made toys, tools, and produced appliances, launching the brand, Mirro Craft.
The catalog is not dated, but there is a sign illustrated in the catalog for the King Air Rifle, a company that existed from 1928 to 1931 (initially the Markham Air Rifle Company and then bought out by Daisy). Thus I am placing the printing of this catalog in that time frame.
I have included most of the pages showing the color work, and the companies represented within. The four signs are photographed as well.
This is a super piece of ephemera, with additional tin “art signs.”
The catalog measures 9 1/4″ x 12″ approximate, and is in fine condition. The signs are fine with some toning to the aluminum creating some shading.
Some dog eared corners otherwise Fine- excellent.
