Description

This is a great image of the well known cavalryman, Andrew J. Alexander, wearing his uniform of a 2nd Lt early in the war.  The CDV has no back mark. Alexander is holding his saber, and forage cap and gauntlets in the other.

At the beginning of the war, he was assigned to the Mounted Rifles, with the rank of both 2nd and 1st lieutenant. That same year he transferred to the 3rd U.S. Cavalry for a time then served as a Lt. Col as Asst. Adjutant Gen. on the staffs of Generals Stoneman, Blair and Wilson (the famous cavalry commander).  He was breveted BG of Volunteers in Jan. of 1865, and again breveted as a BG in the Regular Army for gallantry in cavalry engagements at Ebenezer Church, Ala, and Columbus, Ga.  Earlier brevet for the Peninsular Campaign, and Gettysburg, and Atlanta Campaign, and for the Capture of Selma, Ala.

After the war, Gen. Grant appointed him the senior major of the 8th U.S. Cavalry in 1866, with stations at Camp McDowell, and Fort Union, NM.  The 8th under Alexander’s District was active in pursuing the Apache.  From Fort Bayard in 1871 he was ordered to Fort Garland, Colorado.  in 1879, Alexander became the Lt.Col of the 2nd Cavalry; he retired after a long illness in 1885.

Very fine quality image.
