Description
I am assuming that this cdv image of then Lieutenant Robert Ayres was identified on the image in period ink, by some one other that Ayres, unless he signed his name wrong.
This image has no back mark; shows Ayres in frock and overcoat. Condition is fine.
Robert Ayres enlisted on 12/20/ 1855 as a private in the 1st Battalion of Engineers, and was discharged in 1862 for promotion. Commissioned into the 19th Infantry, which was part of the Army of the Cumberland. Ayres was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga on Sept. 19, 1863. He served as regimental adjutant from June of 1865. Promoted to captain in 1866, and served in the 19th until 1869, unassigned after that to 1871 and resigned. Ayres was born in Pennsylvania.
