Description

This carte de visite was taken of a painting of the Alden Besse (entitled “From Hong Kong For San Francisco”). No photographer back mark.

Built in Bath, Maine in 1871, Alden Besse was named for a sea captain by that name from Wareham, Massachusetts. After completion at Bath, she made many voyages to the Orient, dealing in all manner of good in the China Trade.  Her storied past is filled with much good and bad fortune; bringing Smallpox to Oregon, surviving many wide storms at sea, fire, illness, and various auctions, and lawsuits.  Later in her career, she was used by Hollywood, in early silent films.
