CDV – Hiram A. Stearns, Co. I -6th Mass Infantry.

Stearns was a 27 year old wool comber, from Lawrence, Ma., when he enlisted on April 15, 1861 into the 3 month 6th Mass. Infantry. He was mustered as a private in Company I.   The 6th Massachusetts was the first regiment to respond to President Lincoln’s call for volunteers to put down the Rebellion, and this particular company along with companies, C, D, and L, went through the riots in Baltimore, under the command of Lt. Albert Follensbee.  The regiment performed guard duty around the Capital, etc.

On September 1, 1862, Stearns mustered into Company B, 4th Mass Infantry, which was assigned to the Department of the Gulf, and was engaged at Port Hudson, with 7 killed and 62 wounded, and then sadly lost a good portion of the regiment Brashear City, La, were killed and wounded total 3, but lost 202 men, being captured there.  They mustered out on August 8, 1862, at Camp Hooker, Lakeville, Mass.
