This image was taken in the 1864-65 period, as the 4th Mass HA was garrisoned around Washington at the time.
The unit identify for this soldier was assumed by Mike McAfee, and realizing his knowledge of military uniforms, etc. I am assuming this is correct for the 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. He has a “4” within the wreath of his forage cap; shoulder guides for band epaulettes are on the frock coat. The photographer is Whitehurst Gallery, Washington, D.C. This unit was ordered to Washington to do duty in the defense forts around the capital in 1864.
Very good condition, with a few light areas of soiling on image.
Revenue stamp on reverse.
From the Michael McAfee Collection.
