CDV – Sgt Daniel B. Sawyer – Cook’s Battery & 1st Mass Cavalry.

Daniel Sawyer was a 30 year old carpenter from Brookline, Mass. when he enlisted as a sergeant in the 1st Mass Battery on May 18, 1861.  He mustered out at Camp Clare, Baltimore in August of that year.

Shortly after, in September, he mustered into Company “A” of the 1st Mass. Cavalry as a sergeant, and on the 25th of September of 1862, was promoted to sergeant major. Sawyer was with the regiment through most of the heaviest campaigning and engagements, until his untimely death due to disease in November of 1864, an New Haven, Ct.
