Description
This cartridge box is Circa 1800 give or take a few years. Constructed of sturdy leather with flap and main box made from one piece with applied sides. The original wrought buckles and retaining leather is all original, used in conjunction with the leather panel applied to the upper rear of the box which is used as the shoulder strap guides. The squared off flap has scribed line borders.
Flap: 8 3/4″ wide, 6 3/4″ high. Width of side: (including side panels and outer flap/box 2″; box width 8 1/4″.
A thin brass hook with curled catch is attached to the cover by iron studs; the original catch plate is missing. On the inner box an attached tool/ flint pouch which bears the markings “MC” in two places, and believe these markings as either the maker or owner. The wooden block is drilled to hold 15 cartridges which are about .75 caliber.
The condition is very good, considering age; most of the stitching is intact. Leather shows crazing overall but an even and most displayable appeal.
Caliber of the holes in block suggest an earlier period of use rather than types made in the 1812 era, where the predominant caliber is .69.
A nice example.
