Nice early Type 1 regulation cap.
This is the Type 1 Model 1858 regulation forage cap, with a very small section of the label remaining. There is just enough of the label to see certain features that identify the label style; there is a floral border and the last three letters “RMY.” The full label would read from top to bottom, “size / No. (2) / 6 7/8 / U.S. ARMY / L.J. & I.P.” (Lewis J, & Isaac Phillips – I believe this printed label is specific to this contract).
The cap has the full brown cotton lining and original sweatband. The lining is sewn down to the sweatband; with some tears to the front area. Side buttons and chinstrap are original to his cap. The wool cap is general very good + with a few areas of moth damage that has been repaired just adequately, and should be done properly. This can be done for very little money and the damage would nearly be undetectable. As you can see the cap displays nicely as is.
A nice cap with money left in it.
