Civil War “Common” Carbine Box. These boxes were made to accept wood blocks that were used for a number of carbines with common ammunition. Made by E. Gaylord, Chicopee, Mass, and marked on inner tool pouch lid. A.D. Laidley, U.S. Sub Inspector stamp on outer flap.
There is a name, “Leahy” scratched into the leather between the belt loops. There are two Leahys in the cavalry during the Civil War: Charles Leahy, 11th NY Cavalry who mustered in Feb. 1862, and deserted 5 months later. The other is Dennis G. Leahy, Co. C. 1st Vermont Cavalry, mustered in 9/ 1862, POW -Broad Run, Va. 4/62, Paroled 5 days later, wounded at Gainesville, Va. 10/1863. No guarantee to either of these, but being the only listed candidates, the 1st Vermonter is my pick.
An issued box show use, without block.
