Civil War Dated Adams Express Co Receipt given to Army Paymaster Coats Kinney for a package shipped to Gen. B.W. Brice, Army Paymaster General at Washington, dated December 31, 1864.  Signed by the agent “Chamberlin.”

2 cent revenue stamp applied and dated.

Fine condition.

Coates Kinney (1826 -1904), near Penn Yan, New York. He was partly educated at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, and was accompanied by Thomas Corwin while he studied law. He was admitted to the bar in Cincinnati in 1856. He became a journalist, and worked on papers in Cincinnati. He served in the Civil War as an Army paymaster with the rank of Lt. Colonel.  After the war, he was involved with state politics, and became a senator from 1882-83. He was from Xenia, Ohio.
