Not totally regulation, not having the wreath surrounding the castle. Probably a state volunteer officer’s insignia for his forage cap.

Description
Civil War Engineer Officer’s Cap Insignia.
This insignia for an engineer officer is not totally regulation, as it lacked the bullion wreath. Most likely an engineer officer in need of an insignia for his forage cap, and either not being able to obtain the regulation variety, or a volunteer officer happy with something less expensive.
Made using a piece of oval tin, covered with a course brown fabric on back, and black velvet on the front (now toned to a brownish color), with an applied narrow twisted wire border, and the silvered engineer’s “castle.”
Overall length of the insignia measures 2.5 inches.
A nice original insignia.
Very good condition.
