Payment made to James Gordon, dated 6 Dec., 1864.
Civil War Substitute’s Pay Receipt – New Hampton, NH. Payment made to James Gordon, in the sum of $300. dollars from the Town of New Hampton. Endorsed on the reverse, dated 6 days later. Revenue stamps on both sides.
The only candidate I can find that fits this dating is a James Gordon, who enlisted at Richmond, Va, on Sept, 13, 1864 into the Co C (as a substitute) into the 5th New Hampshire Infantry. He went AWOL in November of 1864. No date of discharge is given, yet he made it home to collect his pay.
Needs some more research.
