DESCRIPTION and RULES FOR THE MANAGEMENT of the SPRINGFIELD RIFLE, CARBINE, and ARMY REVOLVERS. CALIBER .45. by ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT U.S.A., Washington: Government Printing Office. 1898. 69 pgs. Inside cover has in pencil, “State Property. Loaned to Q.M. Sergt. W.M. Collins. Presented to Q.M. Sergt N.H. Roberts by Adj. Gen. Chas. J. Anderson, Richmond, Virginia Sept. 1909”. Condition of the book is good. The inside page is weakening a bit, but still holding. The cover is showing wear on spine top & bottom, some cover paper removed from the lower edge, scuffing, and wear discoloration on the cover front/back.

Charles J. Anderson entered the Virginia Military Institute in March 1864 and served in the battalion of cadets under General John C. Breckenridge in the Battle of New Market. He returned to VMI in 1866, graduating in 1869.  In 1871 he raised a company for the First Regiment, VA Volunteers and served the regiment in all grades from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel. He later took command of the First Brigade, succeeding General Fitzhugh Lee.
