Description
Early 19th Century Militia Drum, Circa 1812-20s. The body is unpainted, with two upper and lower internal hoops for support. No evidence of a maker label. Probably made by a local barrel maker. Hoops are painted in what now appears to be a light gray color paint. Some protected areas suggest the hoops may have been painted in blue, but now quite faded and worn.
Traces of the original leather heads remain on their hoops. The drum rope and leather slides appear to be the originals as well. All of the slides are present, with only one being a period replacement of leather. Construction by use of box nails.
Height of drum body is 11 1/2 inches. Hoops are 2 1/4 inches wide, with the diameter being 13 inches.
The drum has a wonderful untouched patina. The hoops show wear and some wood chipped along edge in a few areas. An age split extends out from the central hole of the body, but holding together fine. There is no evidence of ever having a snare.
A super looking drum, in untouched condition from the War of 1812 era.
