The Franklin B. Doty Post No. 226 was name for this Civil War captain who enlisted in the 23rd New York Infantry, and later a lt.col. in the 179th NY Infantry, and was mortally wounded in action at Petersburg, and died in hospital on April 15th, 1865.
The first entry began in November of 1910- April 1915, is entirely filled with recorded information for the post meetings, dues, business, etc., along with tipped in dispersement (printed) receipts, news clippings, typed letters, etc. most of which was maintained by the post adjutant, J.K. Chapman. Receipts signed by N.R. Bennett (12th NY Inf.).
- Each meeting list officers, bills, and individual reports by members, such as the health of fellow members, and there are numerous deaths, sicknesses among them. Clipping are plentiful on their deaths, and do talk a bit about their Civil War service.
- Many of the tipped in dispersement slips cover cost of gas and electric for the hall. Other items include GAR buttons, other uniform items, care of cemeteries,
- Billhead for the Lincoln Univ, Endowment Assoc. Donor’s certificate, for a donation by the post. (founded by General O.O. Howard as a living tribute to Abraham Lincoln..
- Typed record from a meeting regarding contribution of food for the GAR supper on the Anniversary of the Surrender of Gen. Lee to General Grant and thanks to the Brotherhood of Loco. Engrs. and WRC.
- Hand-written note on Post letterhead to the committee appointed for the supper on Appomattox Day; sale of tickets, Cash contributions, etc.
- By 1915, meeting minutes, and new business getting rather thin in content. numerous clippings of deaths, etc.
- The post moves to another hall in 1915, and Sons of Vets are joining meetings.
The book is 8 x 11 format, spine very rough, and cover almost detached. Hand written at times are to read, but the next owner can spend more time, and find much more here than I took the time to do.
A great look into the goings-on of a small town G.A.R. hall, as the list of veterans decreases with nearly every meeting.
