History of the Second Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry from Organization to Muster-out, Edited by H.W. Bolton, Chaplain.  Hardcover, 1899, 441 pps. A used hardcover book bound in a faded maroon cloth over boards. The condition of the book is good, but very loose sewing of the pages.  Outside condition of the book is showing bumped corners, wrinkled cloth binding on the spine, spotting, edge wear on all edges and spine. The gilt on the front outside cover is fading in the “INF.”.   Signed inside in pencil by an owner?  I cannot quickly find his name in the various lists of companies.

Written in the Preface, “The brief, though brilliant, war with Spain which ended so gloriously for the American arms, furnished but limited opportunity for the display of the fighting qualities of the American Volunteer Soldier…The Actual hostilities came to an abrupt termination with the Battle of Santiago, but the peace negotiations were still incomplete, and the possibility of complications arising rendered indispensable the maintenance of a considerable force in Cuba, and at points in the United States adjacent thereto, for several months after. This service, the most trying, because the most monotonous, that soldiers are called upon to perform, fell to the lot of the Second Illinois.”
