Description

Hospital Steward’s Pay Request From Camp Near King’s Ranch Texas.   Hospital Steward Henry von Versen wrote this note from the Camp near King’s Ranch, Texas, on March 10, 1874, to Paymaster Nichols, requesting his pay be handed to Asst. Surgeon P.F. Harvey, USA, the post surgeon at  Ringgold Barracks, Texas.

Ringgold Barracks, or Fort Ringgold from 1865 on, was one of several border posts along the Rio Grande that was garrisoned by both Confederate and Union forces during the Civil War. After the war, various regiments sent troops into the field, after warring tribes, bandits, and the like. King’s Ranch, established in 1853, by Richard King, was a well known and prosperous ranch near Ringgold Barracks, used at times as another jumping off point for patrolling the Mexican Border, and vicinity.

The document is written on a half sheet of paper, and in excellent condition.

A nice example of a document recording an historic Texas site.
