Jean MacArthur’s Letter, Sympathy Acknowledgement Card- Photo – SOLD

Description

Shortly after the death of General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur died, Mrs. Sylvia Berman of Emporium, Pa.  sent her sympathy to Mrs, Jean MacArthur, the general’s second wife.  The family in turn on April 21, 1964 sent their acknowledgement of her sympathy for their loss.

In May of 1978, Jean MacArthur sent a type letter signed to Chaplain George F. Berslter, Jr. of the VFW post in Collingswood, New Jersey, after he apparently requested a photograph of the general for his that post, which she was most happy to do.  He had sent Mrs. MacArthur the photo on the cover (or the whole magazine) on the ‘Purple Heart’ magazine, which she expressed her happiness in receiving.

The photo sent was a copy of a wartime image; an 8×10 glossy.

I though these two items had for a nice grouping .

General MacArthur passed away on April 5th, 1964.

Jean MacArthur was the second wife of the general, and was with him at the time of the surrender to the Japanese Army in the Philippines in 1942, and accompanied him on Lt. John Bulkeley’s PT- Boat to Australia.  Jean remained in Brisbane, Australia until the retaking of Manila, and she rejoined her husband, remaining with him there, and through the occupation of Japan and Korea.  In 1951 the MacArthur’s made their home at the Waldorf Astoria, where Jean remained long after.  After the death of the general Mrs. MacArthur, stayed active in philanthropic works.  She passed away at the age of 101 on January 22, 2000.

Fine condition on everything.  A nice grouping.
