15 Inches High, & hand painted
This G.A.R. piece encompasses several areas of collecting, from the obvious to Americana-Folk Art, Political (as the post was named for the Massachusetts War Governor John A. Andrews).
The canteen is 15 inches high and is painted dark green with red lettering and orange accents. The letters are painted free hand. Paint over the surface of the front side shows wear, and an unfortunate crease in the center; likewise, the reverse is similar with no major damage. Three tin strap guides hold a leather strap.
The canteen became a symbolic icon of the G.A.R. and usually seen with the motto, “We drank from the same canteen.” This is seen in small souvenirs, post cards, letterheads, posters, prints, etc. Seldom do you see this size canteen.
A great one of a kind item. A G.A.R. buckle was place next to the canteen to show relative size, and does not accompany this item.
