Lot of 3 phrase/ conversational books used by American doughboys in France, Italian, and Germany in the WWI era.
- Soldier’s French Italian and German , by Justice B. Detwiler. 1918. Hard bound, 285 pages, mostly text with a couple of maps. Fine condition.
- Hugo’s Simplified System GERMAN Converstion Simplified. Hugo’s Language Institute, London, soft covers, 64 pages. Ownership stamp on cove, “Property of Lewis Phelan.” Tears on spine area, some roughness around the edges.
- Soldier’s French Course, by Justice B Detwiler. 1917. Hard bound, 203 pages. Water staining throughout, firm copy with wear to covers, particularly on the spine area.
No doubt every soldier carried on of these or something similar. All are geared to learning the language from the military prospective.
