A book for a well known Zouave unit, the 9th New York Volunteers
This hard, marble papers cover boards Morning Report Book has applied the personalized label for “Col. Rush C. Hawkins, Company “C.” / 9th Regiment New York Zouaves. ” The book contains over 60 blank pages that recorded the date, officers, and men present for duty, as well as those absent and sick. A wide column at the end was for required signatures. The last endpaper has a period hand drawn game board for either chess or checkers, and would make for a great camp display.

The predominate green marbled paper boards were finished with leather corners and spine embossed with gold accents. Some of the paper has been torn away, and a good amount of rubbing on both sides. Spine is split, and separated.
Measures 10 x 16 approximate.
Rush Hawkins raised the 9th New York, and first served in North Carolina, then part of the Banks Expedition into North Carolina. commanded a brigade later in the war, and wounded at the battle of South Mills, where he was wounded in the arm. He would later receive a brevet brigadier general’s commission at war’s end.
