Description
New York Militia Officer’s Sword Belt, Buckle and Sash.
This complete pre Civil War set belonged to then Major Lansing B. Swan of the 54th New York regiment.
The cast brass gilt buckle has a rippling over the surface, with applied wire backed “NY and wreath.” The back of the buckle has most of its original japanning or lacquer. The black bridle leather is generally in fine condition, with some wear, but sound overall.
Swan’s original sash is in fine condition too, with some minor wear, most of which can be seen on the top of the tassels. Original length being approximately 9 feet.
Included with the lot is a carte de visite of Swan taken from an earlier albumen circa 1855.
General Swan began is military career with the Rochester Union Grays, a local militia company, becoming its first captain and holding that position for 12 years; then a major in the 54th New York Regiment. In 1851, he was appointed by Governor Hunt, to assume command of the 25h Brigade, 7th Division, SNY; a position he held until his death in 1861.
Not being able to move the Swan grouping for over a year, I am breaking down into components.
