Description

Manual – The COMPANY CLERK By Capt. August V. Kautz, 6th U.S. & Colonel 2nd Ohio Cavalry.  Phila. J.B. Lippincott & Co. 1864.  Hard bound cloth with embossed eagle on front cover in gold. 142 pages, no illustrations, some fold out (form document examples) plates.

This copy is identified by period ink on the inside cover, “Engineer Regiments, Corps d’Afrique.” & on an flyleaf, “Co. B / 2nd Engrs Co. A.”

At the time of the Civil War (before and sometime after), officers were to maintain records of all in their charge; in triplicate. This manual showed how and when to make out those documents, how to keep books, records, and accounts, at all levels in the army. Failure to perform this duty in a precise and timely manner, could cast an officer a great deal of trouble, and money.

The blue cloth show some soiling and wear mostly on the spine (fading primarily). Pages are good, only the edges showing some toning. A tight usable copy.

A necessary manual found in the military library in the period.
