Belgian Copy of the French Model 1842 Rifle Musket

Belgian Copy of the French Model 1842 Musket. Imported during the Civil War as there was a shortage of U.S. produced arms in the early stages of the war.  Chambered in .69 caliber, smooth bore, 40.5 inch barrel.  Stamped with various inspection markings on the breech (both flats, one forward of the hammer), butt tang, and stamps in stock.  Ramrod may be a replacement, as it is not the typical trumpet shaped type, but full length and threaded for tools.

The metal has an even gray-brown patina, smooth metal surfaces. Stock is very good, with minor dings, etc.  Some traces of white paint (probably due to the old “just leave the gun over the fireplace, I’ll paint around it!”). Mechanically sound.  A nice example of a European imported musket for our Civil War, and other hot spots around the globe in that era.
