1/4 Plate Tinted Ambrotype of a Militiaman C1850s Wearing an 1851 Shako. The image is very clear, unfortunately the gilt tinting disguised the pattern on the oval belt plate.  The shoulder belt plate is rectangular with an applied federal style shield with letters above the stripes that appear to be three initials the middle i believe is an “H.” The red tinted fringe on the epaulets may indicate that last letter being an “A” for artillery. I found similar style plates in O’Donnell & Campbell’s  book on American Military Belt Plates, but no hits. The insignia on the shako with the use of the M1832 horn insignia used on the tails of coats, is very indicative of MVM units. This all sums up to a big “I don’t know.”

A fine image incased in Gutta Percha, the the figure of “Havelock.” General Sir Henry Havelock, noted for his recapture of Cawnpore during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and other notable campaigns in Burmese, Afghan, and Persian Wars. The case is in fine condition showing little wear.
