Description
This 1862 dated Ames Naval Cutlass is stamped with the State of New Jersey’s acceptance stamp “N.J.” on the ricasso, stamped upside-down above the Ames stamp, “Made by/ Ames MFg Co./ CHICOPEE./ MASS.” The 26 inch curved blade shows use, and largely bright with a mixture of very light pitting and blemishing.
The brass guard has one small dent visible, and the quillion is marked “10M/321, most likely a ship’s rack number. Grip leather is fine with very little loss, up under the pommel cap.
Overall a nice example without scabbard.
