1876 Horstmann Bros & Co. Billhead – For Captain Clarence Mauck- 4th U.S. Cavalry. The illustrated billhead show the manufactory and store at Fifth and Cherry Streets, Philadelphia. Mauck had a rifle and saber gold engraved, and paid to have this shipped to his location, then, “4th Cav. Fort Reno late Cheyenne Agency, Indian Try.” Fort Reno, IT became Oklahoma Territory in 1890, statehood in 1907.
Clarence Mauck, 1839 – 1881, enlisted in the 1st Cavalry as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1861, and promoted to 1st Lieutenant in a few months later, and in December of that year, he transferred to the 4th U.S. Cavalry. He was in a lot of action in the western theater of the war, and into the Atlanta Campaign. Promoted to major in October of 1864, and wounded at Rome, Georgia two days later. Remaining with the 4th Cavalry after the war, he saw a great deal of action in the Indian Wars, later transferring to the 9th (Black) Cavalry. He died from Tuberculosis at San Antonio, Texas in February 1881′
