7TH US CAVALRY DISCHARGED FROM COLUMBIA BARRACKS CUBA -1902. John J. Gallagher enlisted into the 7th U.S. Cavalry on April 29, 1899 and after 3 years and 9 months, 15 days discharged at Cuba, and payed off there by Paymaster at Havana. He is listed as a 3rd Class marksman, and remarks state his service was “Honest and FaithfuL.”
Signed by Theodore A. Baldwin, as colonel of the 7th. Baldwin began is career as a private in the 19th US infantry in 1862; advanced to Qrmtr Sgt. in 1865, then commissioned 2nd & 1st Lieutenant in the 19th Infantry in 1865 as well. Captain 10th Cavalry in 1867; Major in 1887, LtCol, 1896, temporary Brigadier General of Volunteers in the Spanish American War, and Colonel of the 7th after., Retired as a brigadier general in 1903. Also signed by George E. Lovell, 1st Lt. and Squadron Adjutant, 7th Cavalry. Prior to this he was a captain in the 1st Florida Infantry in 1898, commissioned in 1901 as a 1st Lt. in the 7th, and had a long career, retiring as a colonel of cavalry in 1930.
Stamped on the bottom left is the paymaster signature from Havana.
The 7th Cavalry’s roll in Cuba, was more occupation having been sent there in 1899.
Fine condition with some calligraphy in red around all manuscript words.
