Description
Charles Phillips Smith graduated from the USMA, 43rd in his class, and assigned late in the war to the 3rd Battalion of the 17th Infantry. In 1866, with the reorganization of the army regiments, the 3rd Battalion was transferred to the new 35th U.S. Infantry, stationed at San Antonio, Texas. Smith, apparently assigned to one of those two companies remained in Texas until 1869, and thereafter the unit was sent as part of the Reconstruction troops in the South. Smith resigned his commission on December of 1870.
The very clean image of super photo quality show Smith in a bust shot, and his body and sharp autograph signed on the image.
