CDV- Marshal of Police, George P. Kane, Baltimore City, 1860-1861. Known for his role as the head policeman in Baltimore at the time of the April 1861 Riots in that city, were the first union soldiers (6th Mass. Vol. Infantry) of the Civil War were killed in that city. In February of 1861, Allen Pinkerton, then working for the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore RR, discovered a what he believed to be a plot to assassinate President Lincoln. At that time Kane was the newly elected marshal of police, put into office by Mayor George William Brown (a rabid southern sympathizer), and Pinkerton advised the President, that Kane could not be trusted to maintain the peace, let alone provide his protection. Without due process, Kane was arrested and imprisoned at Fort McHenry, Baltimore and later at Fort Warren, Boston Harbor.
